    Topic: Rattlesnake Behavior Research Project

We will be reviewing a three year rattlesnake research project conducted in Usery Mountain and White Tanks Mountain Regional Parks. The study focused on all six species of rattlesnakes found in the Phoenix Metro area. The project involved locating rattlesnakes within and around the parks, and then data was recorded on their behaviors including rattling, striking, procrypsis and escaping. The study was designed to help educate the public on how rattlesnakes generally behave when encountered while hiking or camping in the desert. The data stands in sharp contrast to what we see in the media and on television. We will discuss some of the research techniques used in the study as well as strategies for using this information in educational outreach and conservations programs involving rattlesnakes. Statistics and data will be provided to attendees in a hard copy format for use in outreach programs.
